Andrei Malaev-Babel

Master Teacher and Head of the International Demidov Association; Moscow and London Demidov Studios Curator Andrei Malaev-Babel is Professor of Theatre at Florida State University (FSU) and of New College of Florida, Head of Acting for the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training, winner of the Coordination Council of Russian Compatriots’ (KSORS) Award in the nomination “For Special Contribution to the Advancement of Popular Diplomacy”, member of the Board of Directors of the Michael Chekhov Association (New York), member of the Stanislavsky Centre’s Advisory Committee (UK), member of Arti Dello Spettacolo-Performing Arts journal’s Scientific Council (Italy), member of the Artistic Council, The Latin American Stanislavsky Research Center (São Paulo, Brazil), nominee for the Helen Hayes Award (Washington, D.C.), author and editor of books and journal articles on the masters of Russian Theatre: Nikolai Demidov, Yevgeny Vakhtangov, Michael Chekhov and Alexandra Remizova.
Internationally Renowned
Professor Malaev-Babel served as the Producing Artistic Director for the Stanislavsky Theater Studio, an award-winning company in Washington, DC. His productions were presented at The Kennedy Center and The National Theater in Washington, DC, where he also appeared as a performer. He has also served on the faculty of The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. During the time of Perestroika, he cofounded the Moscow Chamber Forms Theatre, one of the first Soviet Union private companies.
Professor Malaev-Babel is the founding master-teacher of the Demidov Summer School, Russia. His reputation as one of the leading experts on Russian theatre and acting techniques has brought him special engagements and commissions from institutions, such as Stanford University, The Smithsonian Institution, The World Bank, Russian State Institute of Performing Arts (St Petersburg), the Latin American Film Festival and Teatro Escola Macunaíma (Brazil), the Young Vic Theatre, and The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (UK), The Odessa Philharmonic (Ukraine) and Shanghai Theatre Academy (China). Professor Malaev-Babel is the Curator of Demidov Studios Moscow and London.
